23 and Me

I hope you all had an amazing holiday! Mine was better than I could’ve hoped for. I had family, lots of delicious food, and some very cool presents. I wanted to share with you one of my fun presents that I’d been hoping for for a while! I got a 23 and me DNA kit. Woah! Awesome, right!? You may be wondering what the heck I’m going to do with a DNA kit! My dad likes to make lots of corny jokes about me finally finding out who my dad is. My mom does not find these jokes humorous.

My DNA kit will give me information about my ancestry. As far as I have gathered from ancestry.com my lineage is strictly English. That’s pretty boring. I’m hoping to get some more specific information, though. I have always heard my family talk about having ties to Ireland. And of course, you can’t be from the south without your family thinking you have some ties to native American lineage. I’m excited for the opportunity to discover “who I am” and also fill my family in! Everyone is very excited, as I’ve been talking about this basically forever. Lol.

For previous customers of 23 and me, they also got information regarding certain diseases that you were genetically predisposed to, such as Alzheimer's disease. On their website, they explained that they will no longer be providing that kind of information to new members. That's okay. I'm not totally sure I want to know that kind of info. It may be a little too much for me to handle. 

So according to the directions, you have to wait 30 minutes after you eat, drink, or brush your teeth; which, is harder than it sounds. Rest assured that the only time that there is a 30 minute gap of time that I have not eaten or drank anything, I am asleep. So finally, I was able to exercise some self-control and not eat or drink for 30 minutes. Then you have to spit into a vile. It doesn't look like a lot, but it's actually a lot of spit. Then you just close the vile and seal it. Finally, you register your kit online. They send you the results online, so it's a pretty important step. They provide a box with pre-paid postage and that's it. You just send it in.
